Remote Monitoring Tool PRTG: full availability of networks
- Universal monitoring: one tool to control the entire infrastructure
- Remote monitoring without additional configuration
- Round-the-clock monitoring of remote and local networks
- Get timely notifications and avoid costly downtime
The Need for Remote Monitoring
Today, IT and network infrastructures are more distributed than ever. Company devices and services are distributed across local area networks, branch offices, customer networks (if it is a managed service provider), data centers, and the cloud.
An IT administrator would like to centrally monitor all distributed networks/infrastructure on one console and in one place. The second desire would be a solution that allows you to control all distributed devices and services. The goal of PRTG Network Monitor is to simplify the lives of IT administrators by answering the above and many other questions.
PRTG Network Monitor is a comprehensive monitoring solution that allows you to centrally monitor local and remote infrastructure without additional configuration.
- Comprehensive monitoring is one tool for local and remote networks.
- Round-the-clock monitoring seven days a week with PRTG.
- Get timely notifications and avoid costly downtime.
- Check the performance of the infrastructure in real time.
- Eliminate bottlenecks before they become problems.
One tool to monitor local and remote networks
PRTG is a comprehensive agentless monitoring solution. On the one hand, if a device or service has an IP address or is ip-accessible and communicates over a protocol (SNMP, HTTP, WMI, xFlow, etc.), it can be controlled using PRTG probes. On the other hand, there is no need to install agents on monitored devices.
Once installed, PRTG automatically creates the first probe, which is called a local probe. It runs on the same computer as the PRTG core server and monitors all devices on your local network using the sensors you configure.
You can monitor your distributed networks by installing remote probes. These remote probes allow you to monitor the various subnets separated by the firewall from the local PRTG base server to monitor remote locations. They are also useful in some other situations. All you need is a computer on which to install the remote probe.
Five reasons to use remote probes
There are several situations in which you must use remote probes on the same local network or in remote locations. These situations include the following:
PRTG IN THE CLOUD
You run a PRTG instance in the cloud and want to monitor your on-premises network.
You have multiple locations, and you need to ensure that services are available from all of those locations.
Your network is divided into multiple LANs by firewalls, and the local probe cannot control certain services through firewalls.
You want to monitor the operation of the system on a secure network, and you need a secure connection between the PRTG server and this network.
Reduce the load of the underlying PRTG server by shifting some of the load to one or more remote PRTG probes.
Remote monitoring is easy!
With a one-click installer, the prtg remote probe can be installed and configured with a few clicks. The installer contains all the configuration information needed to connect to the underlying PRTG server.
ORGANIZATION OF CONNECTION
Once installed, the probe initiates a connection to the prtg base server, retrieves configuration information and a list of devices to monitor, and then immediately monitors the remote infrastructure and sends the results to the underlying PRTG server over an SSL encryption connection. Also, you will only need to open one port in your firewall. This port will be used to connect the remote probe.
In addition, the remote probe sends only the results to the underlying PRTG server, not all monitored traffic. This does not overload the communication channels between the remote probe and the underlying server.
SEND MONITORING DATA
PRTG remote probes can also be configured to work with clustered PRTG installations. The probe sends monitoring data to both the primary and backup servers. The main advantage is that remote objects are monitored even if one of the cluster nodes fails.
With the automatic update feature, PRTG updates remote probes each time the underlying server is upgraded to a new version. This will help save time, as you won’t have to upgrade each probe separately.
Remote monitoring for a managed service provider
MANAGED SERVICE PROVIDER SOLUTION
Each PRTG Network Monitor license can be used as a full-featured solution for a managed service provider. You simply install a basic server on your site and monitor client objects through remote probes. This allows you to simultaneously monitor different clients with the same license and install the main PRTG server.
In addition, PRTG Network Monitor provides a credential-based system. Depending on the needs of the client, you can define different access rights: give them full access to their probes, groups or sensors so that they can manage the monitoring themselves, or read-only access, which will allow customers only to see their monitoring data, but not change the settings.
PRTG monitors the client’s infrastructure around the clock and seven days a week. To respond quickly, you can receive alerts through various notifications (for example, by SMS, e-mail, pager, in the form of push notifications). Alerts can also be sent to your customers. You can also define escalation levels.
You can create regular reports for yourself and your customers containing statistical data on events, outages, uptime, etc. PRTG not only ensures that you receive timely notifications, but also gives you the opportunity to create easy-to-understand dashboards and get a quick overview of local and remote objects.
